Why Vegetarian?
For The Animals
Eating vegetarian, or better yet vegan, is the best way to prevent animal suffering. About 10 billion land animals and even more sea creatures are killed for food in the U.S. each year. These make up more than 99
percent of animals killed in the U.S.. The vast majority of these animals endure horrible suffering before their deaths.
For The Environment
Plant-source foods tend to use much less resources and cause less pollution than animal-source foods. Animal agriculture is also a major threat to wildlife. For more information about the effect of a meat-centered diet on the environment, see People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' article Meat and the Environment and Viva USA's guide Planet on a Plate.
For Your Health
A low-fat, high-fiber vegetarian diet has been proven effective in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and cancer of the breast and prostate.
